Throughout the 2013-2014 season, oakhillhoops.com will feature personal stories from our players.
Hello Oak Hill Hoops Family! I’m back to relay to you the journey of our 40+ game season, and it is just the beginning. At the start of every season there is so much promise and potential. Goals are set, plays are put in, rotations are being formed, and the show is about to start. Even the players on the storied Oak Hill Academy’s roster can feel those preseason jitters. However, with a national ranking at #4, we were ready to conquer the world. I mean – come on! We are Oak Hill Academy, right? Nobody could beat us?! Boy – were we ever far from the truth. We suffered a rough loss to Quality Education from NC – our first road game and our third game of the season. In early 30 years, we were the first team to ever lose this early into the season. So much for making history. Yet, Heywood Broun once said that sports do not build character, they reveal it. Right now, our character is being tested, and persistence, determination, and discipline will be key. The loss provided us with a renewed focus and intensity that has boosted our performance even higher than before. With that, don’t count us out just yet Warrior Nation!
On a much lighter note, we recently had five players sign the letters of intent to Division 1 schools this past week on national signing day. Congratulations to Shelton for signing with Wake Forest, Caleb & Cody for signing with NC State, and Kem for signing with UNC-Asheville. We all know that UVA is the best school, but we don’t want to break their hearts.
In addition to that, Coach Smith won his 900th career game over ranked opponent Carlisle School on Friday, November 15th. I can barely count to 900, let alone think of winning 900 games! His overall record is now 902-60. Wow. We as an Oak Hill community just want to say congrats and thank you for all you have done, Coach. You are truly a blessing and inspiration to us all, and we pray that you still have 900 more in you.
That wraps things up for now. Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so I hope everyone eats plenty of turkey and stays warm from this snippy winter weather. Go Warriors!!
