The Finals of the NHSI will be televised on ESPN Saturday, April 3rd at 1:30pm.

Massey Cancer Center Classic to Feature Nation’s and Commonwealth’s Premier High School Programs

In December of 2007, Oak Hill Academy and Benedictine High School met at the Robins Center in one of the most thrilling high school games in recent memory. Current Milwaukee Buck Brandon Jennings from Oak Hill Academy and North Carolina Tar Heel Ed Davis from Benedictine went toe-to-toe and left 6,000 fans knowing they had just witnessed something special. This year’s contest promises to bring the same level of talent and excitement as the 2007 game, but more importantly it will settle a 1-1 head to head record between the two schools.

The Massey Cancer Center Classic is pleased to announce its inaugural game, with Oak Hill Academy facing off against Benedictine for round #3 in an effort to promote the VCU Massey Cancer Center, while at the same time determining the premier private school in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The match-up features the #1 team in the Virginia Independent School poll (Benedictine) against ESPN’s #7 team in the country (Oak Hill Academy).

One of the most storied programs in high school basketball, Oak Hill had three alumni playing in the 2010 NBA All-Star Game:  Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, and Rajon Rondo. This year, the Warriors come to Richmond with a plethora of talent, led by McDonald’s All-American SG Doron Lamb (Uncommitted), 6’7 PF Roscoe Smith (UConn), 5’10 PG Juwan Staten (Dayton), 6’2 G Pe’Shon Howard (Maryland), 6’10 C Baye Moussa Keita (Syracuse), and Newport News native 6’0 SG Keith Hornsby. Benedictine counters with local talent of its in own with 6’6 Michael Gbinije (Scout.com #14 junior), Trey Davis, Erick Moody, RJ Price, Kevin Gill, and Robert Thurston. Thurston missed practically the entire month of January with a broken thumb, and has returned to lead a resurgent Cadet team that is playing its best basketball at the right time of year.

Tickets for the event will be on sale to the public at Benedictine High School. Prior to Game Day, student/children’s tickets are available at Benedictine for $8. All general admission tickets on Game Day are $10, while courtside reserved seats are available for $20. Tickets will go on sale at 4:30pm on Game Day at the Robins Center. Tickets can also be purchased by contacting Thomas Leachman by e-mail at tleachman@comcast.net. A portion of the proceeds from all ticket sales will support the Massey Cancer Center General Fund.

Update from the Hill

February 5, 2010 – I’m back everyone. I know it has been a while since my last entry. I apologize. I know you all have been wondering about life on “The Hill.”

We had a home game Wednesday night against Oak Ridge Military School from NC. It was a pretty good, competitive game for three quarters – very physical. We ended up winning by about 20 points. Our record is now 23-2 and we are currently ranked 6th in the nation, but still looking to move up.

Since our loss on ESPN to Northland, we have picked it up and we are back to playing like the cohesive team we were earlier in the season. Our game on Saturday at the Salem Civic Center is a big one, but another snow storm is headed this way so it may get canceled. We’ve already had four games canceled due to bad weather!

Next weekend we have a huge game on Friday night that will be on ESPNU against St. Patrick’s in New Jersey. As for life on “the Hill” – same as usual – school, practice, dinner, study hall, sleep. Although it doesn’t seem like much…it’s the most efficient schedule I’ve ever been on. It’s a perfect balance between school and ball.

That’s all I’ve got for this entry but, I promise to keep the updates coming sooner.

January 24, 2010 — For a guy who thought he’d only be spending about five to eight minutes per game on the floor while wearing the uniform of the nation’s most elite prep boys basketball team, this season has been an eye-opening experience for Keith Hornsby.

As it turns out, he has evolved into much more than just a garbage-time player for Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, a town in southwest Virginia. He’s a legitimate sixth man as a junior. Though he’s still waiting for the bigwigs from programs in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big East and Southeastern Conference to take notice, he knows he’s at least on the radar map — by osmosis, if nothing else.

“There are such great players on this team, so I just naturally get so much better, and my confidence rises, too,” said Hornsby, who is a former Hampton Roads Academy student and the son of Grammy Award-winning musician and Williamsburg native Bruce Hornsby. “My shots, my driving (to the basket), my ballhandling have all gotten better, but especially my defense. With having to guard these guys, that’s the main thing that’s improved.”

During an open-gym scrimmage in the fall, Oak Hill played host to a room full of college basketball coaches — a common occurrence at Oak Hill. Kansas coach Bill Self took a few seconds to introduce himself to Hornsby. It wasn’t quite the same as getting a scholarship offer from Self, but it was still a moment Hornsby won’t soon forget.

We’re Back

January 25, 2010 — We’re back!  Seems like I haven’t written a diary entry in forever.  So I’ll get everyone caught up with what has been going on.

I had a great Christmas break that was really busy.  It started in Ironton, OH where we went 2-0 and the team played well.

Then everyone went home for Christmas for only two days.  We flew to Portland, OR the day after Christmas.  It was a really tough journey, especially for me.  I was delayed at two different airports and didn’t get any sleep.  I arrived the morning of the first game and I’d only slept about five hours.

The Les Shwab Invitational is one of the top holiday tournaments in the country.  We went 3-1, losing to Westchester from L.A. in the finals.  That was a tough one.  It was even tougher for me being from Los Angeles.  We had the game won and in the 4th quarter we turned the ball over and it cost us.  I made the All-Tournament Team and Doron got MVP, even though we didn’t win the tournament.  Everyone went back home from there, arriving in time to celebrate New Years with our family and friends.  We had a nice two weeks at home.

The team returned back to campus on Monday, Jan. 11th.  We didn’t waste any time.  Coach started us off with a two-a-day practice to try and whip us back into shape after the lay off.  We spent the next few days getting ready for our ESPN game vs Northland HS at the MLK Hall of Fame Classic in Springfield, and we started second semester classes.

We started off great vs Northland and played fairly well.  Our defense was working and we held Sully to 0 points in the first half.  But we only shot 29% from the field for the game.  We played hard but we could not throw a rock into the ocean.  We lost by 1 point.  It was really disappointing.

We went straight from Massachusetts to Greensboro, NC the next day where we played Greensboro Dudley HS at their MLK Day Classic.  We played pretty good and won by 22.  That game helped us to get back on track.

Last week we were preparing for our game Saturday in Morgantown, WV vs Columbia HS from Georgia, the best team in GA.  We took a charter bus up there after practice Friday, and we came away with the win Saturday night 63-56.  Another close one!
