Bucks’ Newest Face

January 26, 2010 — Three or four players and a few civilians were left in the Milwaukee Bucks’ locker room late Saturday night when the relative quiet was pierced by the sound of someone going all “American Idol” in the shower. Turns out, it was Jerry Stackhouse’s baritone echoing off the tile and down the hall, singing a tune no one instantly recognized but making known his presence that began with Milwaukee just five days earlier.

Gary Dineen/NBAE via Getty ImagesEager to fill the void created by shooting guard Michael Redd’s latest season-ending knee injury, seeking to replace some of the scoring and experience that Redd provided, the Bucks reached out to Stackhouse. Never mind that the long-ago North Carolina star had played in just 10 NBA games since the end of 2007-08 and none at all this season in what was looking more like a forced and endless furlough than any official retirement. The Bucks knew Stackhouse — general manager John Hammond had been with him in Detroit, coach Scott Skiles actually played with him for a season in Philadelphia — and felt he had something left in his tank.

I was hyperventilating over Brandon Jennings, of course, and his third-quarter cremation of an entire NBA franchise.
Brandon Jennings averaged more than 38 ppg at Oak Hill Academy.He made 12 consecutive shots and scored 29 points from every spot on the court — driving right-hand spin shots (he’s left-handed), pull-up jumpers from the foul-line, an assortment of 3-point bombs — fadeaways, catch-and-shoots and pull-ups.
The 6-foot-1 rookie point guard for the Bucks did much of the same in the fourth quarter and, despite going scoreless in the first, finished with 55 points, three off the rookie record held by the most dominant player in league history, Wilt Chamberlain. Yes, that Wilt who once averaged 50.4 points per game.

Congratulations to 2008 OHA graduate Brandon Jennings!
The National Basketball Association announced today that Bucks guard Brandon Jennings was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the games played November 9 through November 15.
Jennings averaged 43.5 points, 7.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds in 39.5 minutes per game in helping the Bucks to a 2-0 record. He shot 60.4 percent from the field, 90.0 percent from three point range and 87.5 percent from the line in two contests.
Carmelo Anthony Western Conference Player of the Week
Congratulations to former OHA star Carmelo Anthony (’02 grad) on being named the NBA’s Western Conference Player of the Week, as the NBA opens the 2009-10 season.
The Denver Nuggets forward was named Western Conference Player of the Week for games played from Tuesday, Oct. 27 through Sunday, Nov. 1.
Anthony, who leads the NBA in scoring at 37.7 ppg, has led Denver to its first 3-0 start since the 1985-86 season and only the fourth perfect start in team history.

In his first career NBA game, Brandon Jennings of the Milwaukee Bucks scored 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds and handed out nine assists. He was within a couple plays of joining Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson as the only player to ever record a triple-double in t heir NBA debut.
Brandon Jennings nearly became the first player since Oscar Robertson to have a triple-double in his first NBA game.The next night, in leading the Bucks to victory, Jennings led the team in scoring with 24 points.
Prior to last weekend, Jennings had been known as the trailblazing young player who boldly decided to skip college to spend a year in an Italian pro league developing for the NBA.
Now he owns one of the best starts to an NBA career … ever.

The trail-blazing Jennings toured Europe playing professional basketball last season, eventually found his way to the Madison Square Garden stage Thursday for the National Basketball Association’s college draft, and now has Milwaukee, and possibly Green Bay, written in as the next stops on his itinerary. Jennings, a 6-foot-1 guard from Compton, Calif., and a former national high school player of the year, was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks with the 10th overall pick in the draft and immediately becomes one of the major building blocks on which coach Scott Skiles and general manager John Hammond hope to construct a team that will win in the NBA on a consistent basis. Anthony Matches NBA Mark with 33-Point Quarter
Oak Hill Alum Carmelo Anthony more than helped the Denver Nuggets overcome a 12-point halftime deficit, tying a 30-year old NBA record for most points in a quarter with 33. Anthony matched George Gervin’s league mark for points in a quarter with 33 in the third and finished with a season-high 45 points in Denver’s 116-105 home victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday.
“I’ve never been a part of a quarter like that before,” Anthony said. “I just felt that good. I can’t explain it. My 3-ball was going in, driving to the basket, getting fouled. Just the complete game tonight.” Anthony was Oak Hill’s MVP for the 2001-2002 season and went on to lead Syracuse to the NCAA National Championship the following year.
Hawks Match Grizzlies’ $58M Offer, Retain OHA Alum Josh Smith
ESPN Report — Josh Smith will remain with the Hawks after Atlanta quickly matched an offer sheet from the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday.
The Grizzlies announced earlier in the day that Smith, a restricted free agent, had signed the offer sheet. Terms have not been disclosed but it’s believed that Smith gets a five-year deal worth about $58 million.
